OPERA IN VALENCIA

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

Architecturally, the opera house in Valencia is stunning. It’s location too. Situated on the northern edge of the Arts and Science park, the building reaches proudly for the sky. The former river bed of the Turia is lush and welcoming. The nearby rose garden radiates the colours and scents of many a varieties.

The opera’s interior is spacious with a cool atmosphere. Valencian residents are proud of this institution and ensembles regularly perform to a full house. The acoustics are a matter of contention and quality of sound among professionals is questioned. Audience enjoyment of performances can at times be challenging in some of the seats. The vast majority leave with contented expressions on their face.

A glance at their programme reveals a variety of traditional pieces as well as concerts.

BANKS IN VALENCIA

vlc-el-homefamily-banks001a

Opening a bank account in Valencia can range from difficult to immensely simple and smooth. One issue is finding someone among staff in any bank able to speak fluent English. Add the lack of desire for agreement and haphazard knowledge of what is and what is not legally permitted.

Recent years have seen large changes with through mergers and closures in the banking landscape in Spain. Many brands have consequently disappeared from the market, even if numbers of branches across the city are still quite formidable.

In your writer’s experience, some banks refuse offering an account to a foreigner who is registered while others give misleading information on the conditions of opening an account.

The proficiency of a young woman with whom I spoke to at Santander was exceptional. She stated categorically that I can open an account with my British passport, my British address and a so-called certificate of non-residence, certificado no residencia.

A hunt began for the correct police division, national or local, and which station. Finally, armed with that info, I was able to apply for the paperwork at the police station located behind the Estacio del Norte railway station. Interestingly there was no need for a so-called NIE.

The foreign husband of a Spanish friend highly recommended the service that Sabadell offered. Armed with my paperwork it took perhaps an hour of excellent service in fairly fluent English until I was issued with documents concerning the account printed in English. The online banking provided by Sabadell is available also in English, French and German.

Typically, I was not required to show the certificate of non-residence.

The Spanish are a gregarious folk. They enjoy the outdoors and their frequent reasons to celebrate. This holds true for the natives of Valencia too.

Generational differences are visible across the board. The elderly are more reserved and less likely to speak a foreign language. They already speak two of their own. Younger locals are open and more willing to interact. All are friendly.

Each iconic building of the Oceanogràfic in the City of Arts and Sciences presents a unique aquatic environment. There are the Mediterranean, Wetlands, Temperate and Tropical Seas, Oceans, the Antarctic, the Arctic, Islands and the Red Sea as well as the Dolphinarium.

The largest marine complex in the whole of Europe is an inimitable space in the form of a journey through the seas and oceans of our planet to reveal its most outstanding marine ecosystems to visitors.

Its avant-garde architecture, the arrangement of the various aquariums, and its scientific, leisure, and educational vocation make the marine world more accessible to visitors and helps them become more aware of the need for protecting its fauna and flora.

With and area of 110,000 square metres, it is one of the largest dolphinariums in the world. Facts include 26 million cubic metres of water with a a depth of 10.5 metres; 6,761 square metres of methacrylate panels of up to 33 centimetres thick; 150,000 cubic metres of concrete and 15,000 tons of steel; over 25 kilometres of piping with diameters ranging from 1.4 centimetres to 1.3 metres.

The Oceanogràfic is made up of different buildings that contain the most significant ecosystems representations of each planet’s seas and oceans. A spectacular sphere 26 metres in height, this space simulates two of the most singular wetland areas on the planet: mangrove swamps and fens.

A large dome in the form of an igloo represents the Arctic region. The underwater restaurant located in the centre of the complex, is the most emblematic building of the Oceanogràfic owing to its unique roof designed by Felix Candela. It represents a paraboloid figure similar to that of a water lily, and contains a large aquarium on the ground floor that fits perfectly into the whole of its perimeter.

The Oceanogràfic, hosts a vast array of activities which are designed for professionals and for the general public alike. These activities range from sea turtle recovery and conservation, shark handling and maintenance to sleeping with sharks, firsthand experiences with beluga whales and sea lions through the animal passport activity.

The Oceanografic in Valencia excites with surprising insights. Situated in the spectacular surroundings of the City of Arts and Sciences it is the largest aquarium in Europe.

Its avant-garde architecture creates a magnificent environment where the most important marine ecosystems have been faithfully reproduced. Visitors marvel for hours and experience with wonder.

Through recreating all the seas and oceans of the world, they can teach and inform about each marine habitat. Their main objective is to educate visitors about the dangers to which they are exposed.

The aquarium has transformed from being a marine theme park to becoming zoological and an observatory of the sea. Its direct connections with the beach of Valencia as well as the city make the aquarium a key piece in the processes of education and general dissemination on its themes.

More than a million and a half people have passed through its facilities. They learn through a fabulous experience how to help and protect the marine environment. In particular, special emphasis is placed on preventive action among school-age children, who are the engine of change.

In recent years, the Oceanogràfic de Valencia, has become a centre of orientation connected with diverse projects and institutions to generate synergies and impulses in the maintenance of local ecosystems.

The Oceanogràfic connects the sea with the city and also the aquarium with the sea. It is a round trip of water, animals and knowledge.

The Mission of the Oceanogràfic Foundation
The reason for the Fundación Oceanogràfic’s existence is to conserve the natural marine environment by generating knowledge, performing direct action and creating experiences that encourage attitudes which respect marine ecosystems in society as a whole.

The Objectives of the Oceanogràfic Foundation
The Fundación Oceanogràfic is an institution whose purpose is to conserve and protect the marine world. To this end, it has set a series of objectives that puts in order the activities it performs. Three objectives serve as the pillars on which the Fundación Oceanogràfic is supported. Both the reason why it exists and the basis for all the actions it performs.

Scientific research: The purpose of this work line is to improve and extend scientific knowledge on oceans and on the lives that inhabit them to promote the conservation of species and ecosystems. Research, mainly of the applied kind, intends to maximise knowledge that results from the species kept in zoos and to study marine biodiversity.

Conservation: This objective involves undertaking activities that directly and positively impact the marine world or its species, as well as social awareness-raising programmes to encourage responsible activities with the natural environment.

Dissemination: Its intention is, on the one hand, to put to good use and reinforce the educational dimension and to raise awareness about the activities carried out by the Foundation; and, on the other hand, to attempt to disseminate the actions and results of the two former objectives, as well as general knowledge about the marine world, in order to promote a better connection between it and society as a whole.
