VALENCIA COMMUNITY

Valencia is the capital and seat of government for the autonomous community or “state” of Valencia. The Comunidad Valenciana is home to some five million residents. This makes it the fourth most populous area in Spain with devolved government.

The region is nestled next to Murcia in the south. Castilla-La Mancha and Aragon lay south west and north west respectively. To the north is Catalonia. Zoom in closer to find Valencia flanked by the provinces of Alicante, Albacete, Cuenca, Teruel and Castellon respectively, the former and latter being the other two belonging to the Valencian Community.

The Community of Valencia has two official languages, which are Valencian and Castilian or Spanish, which are the same as the capital. It is run by the Generalitat Valenciana. The seats of the president, cabinet, parliament and other institutions are also located in the city of Valencia.

The community possesses its own anthem as well as its own flag. It is divided into over 260 municipalities or provinces of which, with its population of around 800,000 people, the city of Valencia is by far the largest. Alicante on the Costa Blanca with some 330,000 residents is not even close, while Castellón de la Plana has some 170,000 occupants. The community itself reaches a total of above 5,000,000.
