Getting Around

BIKES IN VALENCIA

Bike paths have been available to cyclists in Valencia for many years. The previous administration improved the situation by implementing many more kilometres of dedicated lanes, especially along major thoroughfares.

The traffic in the city may at times feel a little hectic but bicycles are everywhere too. Riding a bike in Valencia is, on the whole, safe and terrific fun. The weather plays a huge factor too, with rain days at a minimum during most times of the year.

Whether riding along the beachside promenade or through the Turia, the feeling of spacious freedom is a joy to experience. Bike riding has increased both with residents and tourists.

On occasions, inconsiderate motorists can ignore regulations on minor roads that have been declared cycle paths, via de bici, and create unpleasant situations. Be aware also that some police officers may stop those riding in the wrong direction down a one way street.

More recent years have seen hire shops more readily available, where a bike is charged between some € 8 to € 10 per day.

Valenbisi

A great option for expat residents to navigate the city with ease is Valenbisi. Although their bikes are rather heavy, their sturdiness makes than fairly indestructible. Stands can be found in neighbourhoods across the whole city. On odd occasions a free stand or a bike is unavailable but the nearest alternative is normally not too distant.

For a minor annual fee, usage can be facilitated via their useful app or on a public transport card. Bikes can be taken for each thirty minute period for free. Using either the same bike or a different one. Or pay fifty or so cents for each extended period.

CYCLING IN VALENCIA

Recreational cycling in Valencia is fairly easy due to the city being extremely flat. It is also relatively safe, since bike paths criss-cross many areas of the city. Farther afield, cyclists can climb to higher altitudes and highly diverse landscapes.

URBAN FEEL

Arrival in Valencia brings with it a few surprises. First impressions of the locals may cause newcomers to doubt their friendliness. That misguided opinion is rectified rapidly. The city’s residents are extremely welcoming to foreigners.

AIRPORT GETAWAY

As most expat residents may have noticed, Manises airport is comfortably close to Valencia capital. Planes are often visible performing their gentle descent on final approach in the skies south east of the city centre.
