IVAM IN VALENCIA

Art venue exterior

Bright, light and expansive; 18,000 square metres of floorspace and with eight galleries, the IVAM, the Valencian Institute of Modern Art in the Julio González Centre is also impressive.

So too its permanent collections and numerous parallel temporary exhibitions. The first museum of modern art in Spain offers expat art lovers a wide cross section of works from both national and international artists.

Historical European avant-garde is the focus of the Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno with its epicentre a unique permanent collection.

One of the most outstanding on the penisula, its artistic heritage from different geographies and cultural contexts includes Valencian, Spanish, European, Latin American and North American artists.

EXHIBITIONS IN VALENCIA

Magnificent, wondrous, appealing, challenging, ridiculous and moving are just some of the expletives uttered at exhibitions in Valencia. Highly talented and famous local artists are shown regularly as well as some of the world’s greatest.

STREET ART IN VALENCIA

The street art scene in this Mediterranean city is alive and thriving. Tiny, hardly noticeable, scenes vie for attention as passionately as many vast, metre-high murals. Many pieces appear harmonious, others make a more aggressive statement.

A Brief History

A story with repeated periods of flourish and decline intersperses the history of Valencia. Roman soldiers were prevalent in Europe for several centuries before and after the birth of Christ. Just over a hundred years BC they settled in the area of today’s old city.
