Immaculate Conception IN VALENCIA
December 8 2025
As most expats note before they choose to relocate, Spain is a country that has historically been defined by religion. Whilst its populace has become more secularised, a large percentage of the population is still identified as Catholic. Culturally that also holds true, even if a large number of residents are identified as non-practicing, younger people are less religious and the Islamic faith is on the rise.
Most Christians have learned that Mary was a Virgen. The Immaculate Conception raises the level of her purity even further. The day of commemoration of La Inmaculada Concepción as it is known in Spanish celebrates the moment when Mary, the mother of Jesus, was conceived without original sin.
Another Public Holiday
The Immaculate Conception refers to the dogma that the Blessed Virgin Mary was conceived without any stain of Original Sin in preparation for becoming the Mother of God, the Son Jesus Christ.
Although considered a day of feast, there are no special festivities in Valencia. With businesses closed, most people have days off work with many choosing to take an extended period in combination with Constitution Day. Many also traditionally spend this day with their family or friends.
Most shops will also be closed. Meanwhile, more on this topic from Saint Boniface Catholic Church in Lunenberg MA.

CHRISTMAS MARKETS
The longest running market and possibly the one with the most atmosphere is on Plaza de la Reina. Artisan and craft stands offer a wide variety of items for oneself or as gifts. Another with many stalls is inside the Colon market structure. The City of Arts and Sciences is also home to a curious mixture of Christmas stalls and numerous food trucks
Christmas in Valencia
Christmas in Valencia feels very festive due to the brightly decorated streets in the city centre. Lights also adorn municipal buildings and the city hall as well as an artificial tree erected on city plaza. The carousel and ice skating rink prove to be highly popular with people visiting all evening.
