Supermarkets in valencia

A variety of supermarkets and mini markets can be found in each and every neighbourhood of Valencia. The choice is slim and between three major brands.

Mercadona is generally considered to be less expensive, Consum is recognised for its generosity to staff and Carrefour is known for its French origins.

Also of French origins, Alcampo is a subsidiary of another national giant Auchan. The company offers hypermarkets on the outskirts of Valencia too.

Some smaller independent market stores also offer their wares as do a myriad of less well known or widespread supermarket chains.

EL CORTE INGLÉS

One supermarket stands out in Valencia for two reasons. El Corte Inglés is situated centrally on the Calle Colón and, fortunately for some, the store is open on Sundays. This branch of the well known department store chain has a supermarket in the basement.

A large selection of exclusive brands and international items is available. Fresh produce can also be found in the extensive deli section. And even multiple varieties of toilet paper.

Stores focus on its wide range of own branded produce and convenience. Serrano ham is sold pre-sliced and packaged at the counter. Fresh seafood is found at their larger premises.

Stores offer a large variety of own brand goods and their vegetables are considered to be of a better quality. Depending upon available floorspace, they may offer fresh meats and seafoods.

CARREFOUR

Carrefour came to Valencia in the mid 1970s and today offers several hypermarkets with full food sections on the periphery. Smaller express markets within the city are, to the delight of many expats, open almost as long on Sundays.

As the name suggests, the company originates from France and and some may perceive the flavour. Convenience and quick grabs or shopping for the week seems the choice of focus.

They surprise with a variety of quality products, many from their own brands, and several good organic items too. Several non-profits question their animal rights and safety of poultry consumption.
