All Saints IN VALENCIA
November 1 2025
All Saints’ Day celebrates and honours the spiritual bond between us and those who have departed before us. Specifically those saints who are otherwise not named at other times of the year.
Known in Spain as Día or Fiesta de Todos los Santos it is the first of this two day period of remembrance. It is as important a festivity in Valencia as it is the world over. It is a day to remember relatives and friends who have passed over.
The ancient Christian feast was known as Hallowmas or Alholowmesse. Another name, Allhallowtide, traditionally covered this period from All Hallows’ Eve or Halloween to All Souls’ Day, which specifically commemorates all those faithful who have departed with prayer.
Public Holiday
All Saints’ Day is a significant national day off work with most stores closed. Residents traditionally return to their place of birth or family home to pay their respects to the relatives who have gone before them.
It is a day when family descendants adorn the graves of their ancestors with impressive flower arrangements, light candles and also partake in the unique homage of placing old photographs. Many local cemeteries and churches hold a collective mass, often attended by hundreds of people.
Since a Spanish custom has long seen parents name their offspring after one of their numerous Saints, the significance of this day can feel heightened. Particular delicacies can include buñuelos de viento, huesos de santos and perhaps panellets or fogassa.
Roasted castañas or chestnuts can also start to appear on the streets at this time of year. And, since the Spaniards adore food, this is yet another opportunity for families to gather and enjoy a tasty meal together. Along with a good portion of lively conversation.
All Souls’ Day follows, while the Day of the Dead, El Día de los Muertos is also a tradition celebrated celebrated at this time of the year in many parts of the world.

CHRISTMAS IN VALENCIA
Christmas in Valencia feels very festive due to the brightly decorated streets in the city centre. Lights also adorn municipal buildings and the city hall as well as an artificial tree erected on city plaza. The carousel and ice skating rink prove to be highly popular with people visiting all evening.

ORIGINAL MOVIES IN VALENCIA
Original language movies are screened regularly in Valencia. Expats and locals head especially to Babel and Yelmo to enjoy films mostly with subtitles, VOS or VOSE or, at times without, VO. Both art house and blockbusters can be seen.
A Brief History
A story with repeated periods of flourish and decline intersperses the history of Valencia. Roman soldiers were prevalent in Europe for several centuries before and after the birth of Christ. Just over a hundred years BC they settled in the area of today’s old city.
