Labour Day in Valencia
MAY 1 2026
Whist May 1 presents a dramatic and challenging history internationally, Labour Day in Spain also offers it’s own unique story to international residents.
Originating in late nineteenth century USA, the event coincides with ancient Roman and medieval Pagan traditions that marked the transition to spring. Several countries dance around a maypole, light bonfires, with some celebrating through the previous night known as Saint Walpurgis Night.
The Fiesta del Trabajo reveals it’s own national twists and turns, from dramatic to colourful. The first DÃa del Trabajador was observed in Spain during 1889 before being declared an official public holiday in 1931.
The years of wars and Franco’s regime brought many disruptions, denials, boycotts, protests as well as arrests and imprisonments. The church became involved too, naturally.
Following the return to democracy in the 1970s, Labour Day returned and from 1978 onwards, once again became a national holiday and a commemoration of the achievements of the labour movement.
Union demonstrations, or manifestaciones, can be observed in several larger locations while schools, authorities and businesses generally close for the day. Public transport services can be more sparse than normal, yet institutions such as museums and other attractions usually remain open.

AIRPORT GETAWAY
Airport getaway is very easy and quick because Manises airport is comfortably close to the city centre. The metro station for trains to Valencia is underneath the terminal. Take one escalator down from arrivals and two access departures.

STREET ART IN VALENCIA
The street art scene in this Mediterranean city is alive and thriving. Tiny, hardly noticeable, scenes vie for attention as passionately as many vast, metre-high murals. Many pieces appear harmonious, others make a more aggressive statement.
Original Movies
Original language movies are screened regularly in Valencia. Expats and locals head especially to Babel and Yelmo to enjoy films mostly with subtitles, VOS or VOSE or, at times without, VO. Both art house and blockbusters can be seen.
